I just wanted to share with you this fun little video on how to cook quinoa, courtesy of My New Roots. Quinoa is this miracle grain (a seed really) from South America that contains all nine essential amino acids (complete protein), as well as tons of fiber. Nothing wrong with that, eh?

It has a mild nutty flavour and it comes in an array of colours. I would even say that it's a great alternative to brown rice, when you want to mix things up a little bit.

A word of advice: don't buy it at the grocery store since it is rather expensive there. Buy it in bulk at Bulk Barn or one of the many health food stores in Kengsinton Market. And experiment with all the colours!

Without further ado...here's how to cook quinoa:

Sugar causes premature aging.

Sugar suppresses your immune system.

Sugar causes weight gain – because sugar excess in the body converts to fat.

Sugar makes your body more acidic. Did you know that cancer cells grow in an acidic environment?

(I got these facts from registered holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy . You can watch her video on kicking the sugar habit here )

The truth is, I am not a health expert, or a certified health nut, but I do love food and I love to eat. A few years ago I came to the realization that food is a celebration of life, which is why I make an effort to be mindful about what I eat. You might not find the latest fashions in my closet, but my pantry will blow your mind.

As a result of my obsession with the cause-and-effect qualities of food, I am more aware of the impact certain foods have on my overall health. I know that anything with cow milk will give me gas (TMI?), but goat milk products are gentler on my tummy. And I don’t know what it is about Quinoa (other than the fact that it is a complete protein, and a great source of magnesium), but when I eat it I feel light and fantastic. Which brings me to refined sugar: highly addictive, highly dangerous. Aside from the aforementioned side effects of high sugar consumption, I know that sugar can’t be that good for me because when I eat sugar loaded foods I feel lethargic and start getting pimples.

So when a friend said “I rather eat cake than go to the gym,” I thought: “Really? Why?” Because it makes me happy, she said. Does it really? I guess for the moment it does. A sweet treat can bring memories of childhood birthday parties, or joyous Christmas gatherings with friends and family. I get it, I feel the same way from time to time. But I think that as you get older, you need to start making better choices, because, well, you are getting older! Ignorance is bliss, but I am not the first one to write about the negative effects of sugar, so we cannot claim ignorance. This is innate knowledge that we have --I know that I am not the first one to get indigestion after a sweet/fatty meal – it is up to us to pay attention and acknowledge how our body works, and honour it.

What are your thoughts on sugar addiction? do you subscribe to the "everything in moderation" school? do you have any tips on overcoming sugar-holism?

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

I remember sitting in a group of four girls discussing everyday life, when someone started to talk about her aunt's diagnose of breast cancer. She went on to say "One out of four women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer, do you know what this means?" she asked, "one of us will get breast cancer." Then there was silence.  According to the Canadian Cancer Society the correct statistic is one in nine women.

So who gets breast cancer? Everyone.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among young adults. Although there are more cases where Caucasian women are affected, African-American and minority women have higher fatality rates because of the lack of early detection.  In the end, more than ethnicity or age, lifestyle choices are what comes to play when reducing your risk of cancer.

Self-examining is crucial! Here's a how-to diagram.

{picture courtesy of nursingcrib.com}

Other things that experts recommend are: exercising, watching your weight, avoiding hormones and minimizing alcohol. Pretty much common sense healthy stuff you should be doing anyways, right?

The good news it that survival rates are increasing thanks to early detection and regular screenings. So go ahead, touch your boobies daily (although monthly is recommended, but there's no harm in getting familiar).

{Clockwise from left to right: Lipstick, Moroccan Oil, Band Aids, Milk Thistle,
 Face Wipes, Raw Potatoes, Honey, Fruits and Vegetables}

Six more nights of TIFF and let me tell you, partying is fun... until the morning after. I've yet to hear how delightful a hangover can be or how amazing blisters feel or dark under eye circles look.

These are some after-party beauty tips that have never failed me:

Red Lipstick: It is said that when a female is  aroused her lips turn red, which makes her more attractive to the opposite sex. It might or might not be true, but red or cherry lipstick is classic and sexy, so pick your right shade and you can't go wrong.

Moroccan Oil:  Also known as hair crack. Use it to prime your hair for heat styling or right after washing your hair for silky frizz-free hair.

Band-aids: Blisters are uncomfortable, plain and simple. They are also inevitable when you're wearing heels. So just put a couple of band-aids in your purse and don't let blisters stop you from dancing.

Milk Thistle:  Your poor liver has to work overtime when you drink. A few drops of MT on hot water will help you soothe and restore your liver.  Choose organic.

Face Wipes: Going to sleep with your make up on is asking for trouble. If you can not make it to the sink to wash your face, simply wipe the make up off with a refreshing wipe. I love Biore because it contains Salicylic Acid that will exfoliate and remove all those nasty impurities.

Raw Potatoes: Raw potato wedges work wonders on under eye circles. You see, potatoes  contain catecholase, an enzyme that is used as a skin lightener in many cosmetics. Leave on for 10 minutes and voila! no one will be able to tell you went to bed at 5am.

Raw Honey: Everyone knows that raw honey will leave your skin feeling softer than silk. If you didn't know, now you do. Apply a thin layer to your face, leave on for 5 minutes or so and rinse off with luke-warm water.

Fruits and Vegetables: This last tip is the most obvious. Not to sound like your mother but... drink lots of water and eat your fruits and veggies. You're going to need all the energy you can muster.

Party on party people! Have a beautiful TIFF.

If I am giddy with excitement today, it can only be because of two things: 1) A free movie (featuring Johnny Depp) , 2) Chocolate!

Yes, the audience choice for the final movie on the Longo's Free Flicks @ The Harbourfront is Chocolat (say with a French accent), starting a very (very) sexy Johnny Depp. If you ask me,  Chocolate + Johnny Depp = Perfect Chick-flick = Perfect Wednesday Night.

Oh! and the movie is also very good. Watch the trailer:

In honour of the movie I made some low-fat but still delicious chocolate truffles. The secret is in omitting the cream and butter and replacing it with honey. You also have two options. You can add coffee to add some kick, or you can add rum if you want to make it fun. A truffle or two are sure to satisfy your chocolate cravings.

INGREDIENTS
1 Bar (200g) of organic dark chocolate (70% cocoa or more)
1/4 cup of strong black coffee (substitute for rum if you wanna have fun)
2 tablespoons of acacia honey
Cocoa powder, to dust (you can also use sprinkles or coconut chunks)

 METHOD
(based on the recipe found on the book Cook Yourself Thin)
  1. Melt your chocolate gently in a large bowl over a pan of boiling water until it liquefies.
  2. Slowly add coffee (or rum*) and stir to mix. The consistency of the chocolate will thicken. Then add honey, mixing it slowly until the consistency becomes smooth.
  3. Put in the Fridge for about 30 minutes at most. You want it nearly solid but not frozen.
  4. Remove from fridge and with a melon scooper scrape out little chocolate balls. Cover with cocoa powder or your topping of choice.

* if you're adding alcohol to the chocolate it has to be at room temperature. If it's not it  will upset the chocolate, and the last thing you need is grumpy chocolate.

The Sassy Cook has an amazing blog about food and life, mutually exclusive. I've asked her to share this post because I agree that when things go wrong (not just in love) you should always be extra kind to yourself  and then move on.

THE BREAK UP INSTRUCTIONS: A CULINARY JOURNEY

Step 1: Set the table with stunning flowers, just for YOU.

Step 2: Because you have no desire to cook, purchase frozen pizza.
Feel less guilty about the purchase by lavishing pizza with better toppings
- brie, broccoli, farmers sausage, gorgonzola, fresh basil, etc.
 (apologies for the post-bite photo..I couldn't wait!)

Step 3: Cook any leftover memories on high heat until crispy.
Please adhere to your building fire safety codes while testing this recipe! HA.

Step 4: Order your favourite sushi, and watch episodes of glee, in bed.
repeat as necessary. watch out for wasabi in your bedsheets! YOWZAA!

MONDAY NOTE

Posted by Toronto Girl 1 comments

I was walking on my way home from my interview with Aline Morales, when I decided to stop by and get a small cookie from my favourite bakery. I only go there once in a full moon, so this is a really cherished treat. On my way home again, as I am happily eating my cookie, this young “gentleman” approaches me and screams loudly “Oh my god! Oh my god! YOU HAVE A FAT ASS BUT I WOULD STILL HIT THAT!” I didn’t know whether to take it as a compliment (a fat ass is not necessarily a bad thing), or be humiliated. I walked in disbelief for about 5 minutes, experiencing a roller coaster of extreme emotions. Confused and shocked that someone would dare be so rude, until I came up with the following (super lame) come backs:

1 – Like I would let you hit that (kind of lame).

2- Well you have a skinny ass, so there’s no way I would let you hit that, m*f. (kind of bitter)

3 – How dare you be so rude? (I’m just not good at giving out insults...)

It was then that I decided to just let it roll. I was not going to let a 15 year old idiot tell me how to feel about my body. Just like I was not going to let a fashion magazine, or a movie star, or a diet product tell me who I was, or if I was worthy of my own acceptance. I decided right then and there that I love my gorgeous fat ass, and I would proudly sway it with every step I took, on my way back home.

And because its Monday and we all need a little laugh...

When it comes to vanity, tanning is a hot button issue. You tan because you want to look good, but after years of UVB/UVA exposure do you actually look good? And how much exposure does it actually take to cause some damage? Who is safe and who is at risk?

At a recent trip to the Vichy tent at Luminato, I learned about skin damage caused by the sun's rays. I went with my friends Kathy(burns immediately), and Layla (who tans easily). We were each photographed by a UV Camera (looks like a Polaroid camera but with two lenses) and as we waited for the results a Vichy consultant told us about the importance of sunscreen.  Generally speaking you can choose your SPF in accordance to your skin tone.   The lighter you are, the higher the SPF number you should use. The darker your skin, the less sensitive you are to sun exposure. This means you could get  away with lower number.

{UV Photograph reveals Sun Damage - This girl is 17, and is showing significant sun damage.
According to our Skin expert at Vichy, you might not be able to see them now, but you will in
10 years from now. After having a good look at my tanning addicted neighbour - I concur}

So how to determine where you fit in? Well, there are six different types of skin:

HIGH RISK (SPF 30 or higher is recommended)
Type 1 - always burns, never tans. Sensitive to sun exposure
MODERATE RISK (SPF 20-30 is recommended)
Type 2 - burns easily, tans minimally.
Type 3 - burn moderately, tans gradually to light brown.
Type 4 - minimal burning, always tans well to moderate brown.
Type 5 - rarely burns, always tans profusely to dark.
LOW RISK (SPF 15 is recommended)
Type 6 - never burns but tans darkly. Least sensitive to sun exposure.

So don't make it a question of vanity vs. health. Learn your skin type, learn to take care of it and enjoy the lovely weather :)

How I got LAID

Caught your attention didn't I?

What a taboo subject, eh? It seems that we talk about it all the time with our friends, while holding a glass of wine with one hand and covering our giggles with the other one. Yes, we are the "Sex and The City" girls. We sit and chat with our girlfriends about our sex lives, sometimes brag about our hook ups, share tips and all that, but how often do we have real conversations. I mean real conversations about the good, the bad and the scary.  Are we afraid to have these conversations? or are we just too ignorant to have an honest discussion when it comes to sex?

Well the book LAID by Shannon Boodram is just that: an open, raw and completely honest, unapologetic discusion about sex. It talks about everything from random hook ups, to "making love", to wanted/unwanted pregnancy, to rape to aids and everything in between. The stories in LAID force you to sit down and look at your choices and ask yourself questions about what you want your experiences to be like.  At the end of the day, the who, what, where of your sexuality is your decision, but wouldn't you rather know all your choices before you get down and get yours?

LAID, the book, is available at all respectable bookstores, but they had ran out of copies when I went to pick mine up so I bought it at Amazon.

This is the book summarized by Shannon in her own words. Watch:

A LUSH-ious Weekend

Posted by Toronto Girl 3 comments

I once read that if you can not eat it, you shouldn't put it on your face because well, you will end up eating it. After all, your skin is your biggest organ and it absorbes EVERYTHING! So as usual, organic, natural and delicious ingredients are the way to go.

Last Sunday, Lush on Queen Street hosted a Spa Night and I dragged my bestie along for the super indulgent beautifying experience. Lush is the place to go in Toronto for all natural, organic, hand made cosmetics.  They carry everything from shampoo bars (no packaging = good for the environment) to foot scrubs (who doesn't love cute feet?) and while their prices are a bit higher end, if you're going to invest in something, invest in your health (beauty = health).

Also their staff is hilarious! they absolutely know every single product, so if you have any questions don't be shy and ask, they will even throw in a story or two about how they found an alternate use for the product (more bang for your buck) all the while relating it to an episode from Sex and the City.

We each had to pick a treatment, so Soraya got a luxurious facial. Being the hard-working, crazy-busy girl that she is, she needed something that would refresh her face and give her that "I-just-woke-up-from-a-long-sleep-glow".

Her facialist cleansed her face with an almond/rose water/ lavander scrub called Angels on Bare Skin, followed by a B.B Seadweed everyday mask with aloe vera, seaweed, honey and rose and finished it off with Eau Roma Water , and to hydrate her skin she used the Celestial Moisturiser containing vanilla and almond milk. And voila! A beautiful, refreshed girl.

Myself, I am always running from one place to the other and I figured that my feet needed a little pampering. Especially after long months of captivity inside my winter boots, so I indulged in a foot scrub. I soaked my feet in warm water spiced up with a Bath Bomb, and then I experienced heaven via a handsome man (thanks Craig!) massaging my feet with a cooling minty foot scrub called Fair Trade Foot Scrub containing spearmint, peppermint and cocoa butter. Finally my feet were softened with a Therapy Massage Bar.

We had so much fun trying out their eco friendly products and our skin felt so amazingly soft by the end that we picked up a few of their products so that we can reenact our lush experience ourselves. Getting Sick

Posted by Toronto Girl 1 comments
I remember the first time that I got sick when I was on my own. I was 21 and I lived in this tiny little bachelor by myself. I had been in the city for 2 months and I had no idea what to do, or where to go. There's nothing scarier than getting sick, being by yourself and not knowing where to get help.

That time I was fine, but the next time I got really sick and I actually had to get me to the hospital. All by myself. I have asthma and I couldn't breath and my puffers wouldn't do the trick, I had to get it together quickly. That experience taught me to be prepared. Being prepared means not scrambling around when you have to but having everything ready to go in case of an emergency.

THINGS ALL GIRLS SHOULD HAVE PREPARED (IN CASE YOU GET SICK)
  • $40 - put them in an envelope in a accesible place, if you get sick, there's your cab money.
  • The phone number to a reliable cab company - I call City Cab at (416) 366-6868
  • Your family doctor's name and phone number
  • A list of all the medication you are taking
  • A list of your allergies
  • If you have allergies have some Benedryl, an EpiPen or a Twinject ready (with you at all times!)
  • Know your closest hospital and your closest walking in clinic
  • The phone number of a person that you trust (family, friends, your landlord)
  • Your Health Card
Put all this in a little box or kit by your bed/ you night stand/ your closet, somewhere that is easily accessible.

Phew! What a week!

I don't know what it is, maybe because its been a bit warmer, I feel the need to run around and start working out. Its like my body has suddenly awaken, but of course today is dark and gloomy and raining, so its a bit harder to be motivated. My no-fail motivational technique is to think about Toronto Girl Lyzabeth Lopez.

Last year I trained with her in the summer and I had never been in better shape. She taught me some pretty cool stuff about eating healthy and being good to myself, you know stuff that you never really thought about, but really, it makes so much sense. She often talks about lifestyle changes without sacrificing. For example, if you like sugar, trade your afternoon sugary snack for some fruit. Pretty simple right? but its simple choices like this that will make you healthier and happier. She is all about fitness as a fun way of life and nutrition as a holistic way of being self-indulgent.

So as I get ready to go out of hibernation and hit some Casaloma stairs (some of the best stairs in the city and the recipe for a perky bum) I always watch one of her videos from last year when she was training to compete at some body building show. Her sheer determination, stamina and desire to be the best she can be always pumps me to go out there and have some fun.

So think about it, get motivated to be fit and happy. Make up a workout playlist, buy a cute water bottle, do some research, check out a new park, get out of the bus a stop sooner, dance around your room, whatever you do, the weather is getting warmer and I can't think of a better way to enjoy it than to get moving.

In the meantime, check out my all time favorite Lyzabeth video. Its my favorite because she includes her recipe for her yummy vitality salad, and let me tell you, I am the kid at the table that HATES vegetables, but I love this salad.

Happy Friday :)

Bean Burger Recipe

Posted by Toronto Girl 0 comments
You know how I am always saying save your money, cook your own meals? well, its harder than it sounds isn't it? so I guess I am going to practice what I preach and do as I say. Eating out is ...out, but it doesn't mean deliciousness is out of my life as well. You see, I have friends, and these friends can cook and I have bugged them and bugged them until they gave me their yummy-licious budget friendly recipes.

First up,  T's bean burger recipe. She is a vegetarian cooking goddess and makes these delicious bean burgers. I made them a couple of weeks ago for my meat loving bf and he had seconds, so they're not so bad. They are amazing!!!

Here are the ingredients:

1 Can of Black Beans ( I enjoy Eden's Organics Black Beans)
1/2 Cup of Bread Crumbs ( I like Mr. Pita's because it contains no eggs)
1/2 Cup of Onion chopped to perfection
1 Garlic Clove Crushed
1 tbs of Dried Bay Leaves/ Cuming/ Black Pepper/ Coriander/ Sea Salt (depending on what you like or have around)
1tbs of Canola oil (I use the spray type so its about a 2 second spray)

Instructions:

1) Rinse beans and drain while you chop onion, crush garlic and mix spicies.

2) Mix all ingredients together and mash them up. You can mash them with your bare hands, but I have a food processor so I use mine because I am lazy.

3) Now that  the mixture is ready, roll mixture into a ball and flatten to form a patty. Heat a little bit of oil and place the pattys on the pan until they are browned.

4) Bon Appetite! I like to eat them with a bit of avocado. 2 pattys will leave a regular person satisfied.

Hot for Hot Yoga

Posted by Toronto Girl 0 comments

I have found something that centers me...I've done it two nights in row. Its been hot, sweaty and oh so relaxing.

MOKSHA SSHMOSHKA
Moksha hot yoga is a series of postures practised in a heated room, usually 39C. The room is super tranquil, the lights are dimmed and your teacher focuses on helping you become aware of your breathing and your body movements. Through the series of movements you work on your flexibility, balance and breathing. You can really feel your mind and your body connect and work together. Its very zen. Its true, you sweat buckets! This is really not a bad thing, especially if you take into account that you have released ALL those toxins and your body feels a whole lot better because of this.

Among the many benefits of hot yoga there’s the weight loss, improvement of the immune system, increase of flexibility, etc.  But it goes beyond that. You will feel a sense of peace, and this ball of energy, laughter. You will realized how amazing your body is, that it doesn’t matter if you’re a size –0 or a perfect 10, all your muscles working together are beautiful. And you will be completely energized, refreshed, ready for the good times.

Since I am all about living without killing the budget I investigated some affordable hot yoga options:

  • All Moksha Yoga Centers offer you unlimited yoga classes for $20 on your first week. That means you can go every single day and become completely hooked.
  • They have classes that are Pay-What-You-Can (minumum donation $5) called Karma classes. On Yonge and St.Clair its on Fridays at 8:30pm. I suggest you come one hour early as this class fills up quickly!
  • Miksha Yoga studio also offer community classes, taught by a student teacher, they are just as good as the certified teachers and are only $5!. On Yonge and St. Clair this class is on Saturday at 5:00pm. Again, I would arrive really early, as I know I'm not the only person that loves a good deal.
So try it out and tell me what you think! Leave a comment...

What's Eating You?

Posted by Toronto Girl 0 comments

One of the hardest things about being a single person (in the city or elsewhere) is, hands down, eating. No, no, I'm not going to excuse my eating habits but ...okay! I am excusing my eating habits. But really, go to the super market. Super markets are not single people friendly. The inexpensive items are too big, the small ones twice the price. So it all comes down to this conundrum: Do I buy cheap and let half of the food rot? or do I pay twice as much because I'm single? If you pick option #1 you will end up eating the same thing every-single-day for a week. I don't know about you, but this Toronto Girl loves variety.

This is where the devil comes in: Take out. In cute packaging. Oh dear, I go through months where I don't do groceries, I just eat out. Then my pants don't fit.
So now I am at the stage where my pants are not fitting and tunics and leggings have become my uniform. I am looking at my take-out bills and after doing the math I have realized that buying the expensive single-people-items will save me about $50 a month. Not a number you laugh at.

After this epiphany I called by aunt. A food connoisseur and fabulous single home-maker. Here are a few tips she shared:

- Buy organic produce - it usually comes in smaller quantities and its good for you. Pricey? yes, but as the saying goes "pay now or pay more later"

- Buy grains (organic) in big quantities - grains don't perish as quickly so, say, a bag of brown rice will last you a month, provided you store it well

-Read your food fliers and see what's on sale. We do this with clothing too right? But also know why it is on sale! The expiry date tomorrow?

- Get your organic meat at the butcher (where its sold by weight and you can control the amount you buy) and don't get a lot, you should not be eating meat every single day anyways

- Have friends or roommates with a similar passion for good food and saving money? take a field trip to the farmers market every once in a while. Buy organic fruits and veggies, and at the end of the day divide and conquer. Split the goods and the bill

- Support local farmers buy organic. Knowing you are doing something good for the environment, the local economy and yourself will help you keep motivated

- Cook on Sunday afternoons/evenings. Perfect way to get ready for the week ahead: by taking care of yourself first. Store meals in glass containers. Prepare salad but don't put in any dressing until you're about to eat it.

So, it is my hope that the following tips will help be become a domestic goddess , a savings queen and help me fit into my pants again.

What's poppin'?

I've never really been a fan of taking pills, I've always been a bit suspicious of how the pharmaceutical industry offers a cure for something and at the same time gives you something else. Anxiety? take a pill and it will give you diarrhea or a heart attack. It just doesn't make sense to me.
I'm not going to lie. A couple of years ago when I had a surgery Tynelol 3 saved me from a lot of pain, but still, I hesitate whenever I am faced with the choice of taking a pill.
Over the weekend I watched a documentary about Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD). Shocking and truthfully funny, it was a real eye-opener about the creation of FSD and the respective drug to cure it. Is sexual dissatisfaction a disease? or is it just a difficulty? No one really knows, so are pills really necessary to address this problem? but I think the question that really applies to us all is: are there no other alternatives? or are we just too busy/lazy to look for them and just want a quick pill fix? are we letting pharmaceutical companies exploit our insecurities, fears and irresponsibilities?
I am not insensitive or naive, I know people have chemical imbalances that cause anxiety and depression, but I still think that before we are diagnosed and treated with prescriptions we should look for other answers. Or at the very least question our doctors and the prescriptions given out...
"There's a lot of money to be made telling healthy people they are sick" - Ray Moynihan, Visiting Editor of the British Medical Journal, Co-author of Selling Sickness.

Please watch the documentary. I think it is brilliant. It raises questions about risks vs. benefits, money vs. health and ethics vs. profits.
